What to Pack for Murmansk in January: Gulf Family Guide

January 20, 2026Maria

January in Murmansk is not Gulf winter. Air hovers around −15 to −25 °C, wind off the Barents Sea adds chill, and aurora hunts mean hours outside at night. Pack for warmth, not fashion.

The layering formula

Base: merino or thermal tops and leggings — one set per two days (laundry is slow to dry).

Mid: fleece or light down sweater.

Shell: waterproof insulated parka below the knee for women who prefer coverage; same for children.

Extremities: rated −30 °C boots, wool socks, liner gloves + mittens, buff covering nose and cheeks.

For children

  • One-piece snow suit or bib pants + jacket (easier toilet breaks than full suit for ages 5+).
  • Thin hat under hood — double hat layer beats one thick hat.
  • Hand warmers (buy in Murmansk pharmacies) for aurora waits.
  • Tablet loaded with offline content — airport delays happen in winter.

Aurora nights

Tours leave after dinner; you may stand 45–90 minutes in open tundra.

  • Chemical warmers in pockets.
  • Headlamp (host carries spare).
  • Do not rely on abaya fabric alone — wear thermal leggings and long coat; modest layers underneath shell jacket.

Prayer and modesty

Thermal layers fit under abayas and thobes. Pack travel prayer mat with moisture barrier — snow is everywhere. Wudu in hotels is warm; outdoor stops use planned breaks at lodges.

Halal snacks

Airport and train options are limited. Pack dates, nuts, and child-friendly crackers. Murmansk supermarkets stock halal chicken and fish — we shop on arrival for lodge stays.

Leave at home

  • Light Gulf shawl-only winter looks — insufficient.
  • Open leather dress shoes.
  • Oversized hard suitcases (suggest soft 23 kg + cabin for domestic flights).

Buy in Russia

  • Quality wool socks and ushanka hats at reasonable prices.
  • Last-minute glove replacements in Murmansk malls.

Pro tip

Pack one indoor outfit per person in carry-on — if checked luggage delays, you still dine comfortably at the hotel while we track bags.
